if i was a tulip

winter returned again - woke up to cold, light snow and a gloomy looking sky.
so to cheer myself up, i bought a bunch of orange tulips that were so beautifully displayed
when i walked into the grocery store... do ya think they planned it that way :)
to brighten my day, i played around with a painterly effect and finished it off with
'shine' texture from kim klassen cafe

text reads...
If I was a Tulip
And you were wind's wings,
I would not count
My broken dreams,
But bless the coming spring.

week five beyond layers - painterly effect

awesome lesson this week at beyond layers.  we're creating a painterly effect using kim's finale and sienna textures and different adjustment layers.  the one comment that stuck in my mind when adding the textures is to have them complement the picture - not fight with it... i think i achieved that here

new lens

how's that for timing... ordered a new 50mm lens last week and it arrived today - happy valentines.
so far i'm lovin' it.  and guess who gets to be my model!  mr. maxie sure knows how to work the camera :)

texture tueaday and happy valentine's day

i used kim klassen's  softly, and than some and 123 overlay textures for todays
texture tuesday theme - happiness

week four beyond layers - gradient map technique

the challenge this week was to experiment with the actual photo set up and than experiment with the gradient map tool or hue/sat adjustments in pse to get a vintage feel.
i set up two foam boards on my kitchen table with afternoon light shining through the window.
than set up the shot using red wrapped heart chocolates at the base of a red vase.
the original shot, to say the least, was quite red.
using kim klassen's revolution texture and experimenting with the gradient map tool (awesome technique), i got the overall vintage feel i set out to achieve.

week three beyond layers - storyboard

wow! are these going to be fun to do... creating storyboards with daily time capsule photos.  thank you so much kim and xanthe for the inspiration.  the possibilities are endless.
this afternoon the temp got to +12c (54f) and the best part - no WIND (remember this is early february in southern alberta)  it was so nice the puppies and i headed to the dog park for the afternoon and here's my storyboard memory.  enjoy

week two beyond layers - vision and blur

it seems mother nature didn't want to share her natural light with me the last few days. so instead i made a little corner in the spare room into a pseudo white room. not the best but with the help of ACR...

for this assignment, the single word i chose (or rather it chose me) was moment (in time).
i than set out to find the picture. like kim and her beautiful old listerine jar, i have this green bottle (and a blue one) that i've kept for years – never doing much with, but i just love their shape and color.

today the green one became my picture along with a stem snipped off a plastic bouquet of colorful flowers. to digress for a moment... every fall, after the flowers have gone i head to the dollar store to pick up a colorful bouquet of plastic flowers and plant them in a pot of dirt that sits right outside my back door. i just love colorful flowers and what better place than the back door to enjoy summer flowers throughout the winter months.
anyway, this stem with the butterfly looked to be the 'one'.  i set up the still and experimented with many different settings and after some tweaking in ACR here was my 'moment'.
i added kim klassen's texture 'simplicity' soft light 100%, than another layer of soft light 100% to burn the edges. the font is called 1942 report. enjoy

texture tuesday

this week's texture tuesday theme is 'story'.  check out kim klassen cafe... she's added a giveaway this week... it's a necklace from ruby loves handmade jewelry - both sites are so awesome.
my story submission i used kim klassen's 'if only' screen 22%, 'lola' linear burn 24%, 'poetic' hard light 35% and added text with a blend of difference at 100%   enjoy

another 'just enough' from week one beyond layers

another attempt at 'just enough'... this is ali and max having a game of tug.
i added a hue/sat adjustment layer to tone down the blue than added kim klassen's awesome texture 'awake' twice, one color 100% and one overlay 100%, both with layer mask revealing only the dogs.

week one beyond layers - just enough

first weeks assignment from kim klessen's beyond layers course is to keep it simple... just enough processing, just enough texture, just enough color, just enough... not too much... go light... go easy.  who would have thought 'keep it simple' would be so challenging.  i looked back at my photos/art and i sure haven't incorporated this style into much.  so... here's my first 'just enough'  i set the stage with something simple... a great cup of tea and a great read.  i applied a few adjustment layers (hue/sat and levels) and added 'awaken' screen 61% and 'awaken' rotated vertical soft light 37%.  i'm already liking this simple/just enough style.  by the way... the great (current) read is 'the china study' if you're interested in nutrition have a look at this book - it's awesome

confidence

using kim klassen's weekend texture 'confidence' i started going through the blend mode and when i got to 'hue' i liked the result so much i stopped there.  Ali's pose fit this theme.

first word that came to mind after many textures and filters was JOIN.
the joining of winter and summer.

she's got legs

I was trying to get some macro shots of the native grass and ended up with this instead...
